Aneroid Sphygmomanometer

How It Works

Cuff — wrapped around the upper arm and inflated to temporarily stop blood flow

Pressure bulb — squeezed manually to inflate the cuff

Dial gauge— a circular gauge with a needle showing pressure in mmHg (0–300), no mercury or liquid inside ("aneroid" = "without liquid")

Deflation valve— slowly releases air while readings are taken

Blood pressure is read with a stethoscope (auscultatory method): systolic pressure at the first Korotkoff sound, diastolic when sounds disappear.
