Understanding UDI Codes for Medical Devices

UDI stands for Unique Device Identification, a "special medical device identification system" established by the US FDA. It assigns a unique identifier to a medical device throughout its entire lifecycle, serving as its unique "ID card" within the product supply chain.

A UDI consists of a Device Identifier (DI) and a Production Identifier (PI). The DI is static information; it identifies the medical device within the supply chain and serves as a "keyword" for accessing databases to trace the product's basic information. The PI is dynamic information, including the medical device's serial number, batch number, production date, and expiration date. It is dynamic additional information for the medical device and must be used in conjunction with the DI to identify a specific medical device.

What are the benefits of implementing UDI for medical consumables?

The UDI system, by assigning each medical device a globally unique "digital ID card," enables seamless data flow across the entire supply chain, from production and distribution to hospital warehousing, clinical use, and adverse event tracing.

Benefits of UDI:

1. Ensuring Patient Safety and Clinical Efficacy: When medical devices are implanted or used on patients, their UDI codes are accurately recorded. In the event of adverse events or product recalls, medical institutions and regulatory agencies can quickly and accurately locate affected product batches and patients, greatly improving risk management efficiency and patient safety assurance capabilities.

2. Enhancing Supply Chain Transparency and Efficiency: For manufacturers, distributors, and hospitals, UDI enables refined and automated inventory management. By scanning the UDI code, product authenticity, expiration date, batch number, and other information can be verified in real time, significantly reducing human error, lowering logistics costs, combating counterfeit and substandard products, and optimizing overall supply chain efficiency.

3. Empowering Intelligent Regulation and Scientific Decision-Making: UDI provides regulatory agencies with real, accurate, and massive amounts of product circulation and usage data, enabling them to conduct big data analysis and early warning, realizing a shift from passive response to proactive monitoring, and from post-event traceability to pre-event prevention in regulatory models, improving the scientific and forward-looking nature of regulation.

As a professional manufacturer of medical consumables, Haorun Medical has fully implemented the UDI system for all our products, including gauze pads, gauze rolls, tapes, and bandages. Through UDI, we achieve refined traceability of the production process and transparency in supply chain management, providing our partners with efficient and reliable value-added services.
